Qualify Welders by Testing

To determine if a welder is qualified, a destructive test must be performed on a specimen weld. Depending on your requirements, additional testing can be done to qualify the welder in other processes and positions. The following is the minimum required to qualify a welder to perform basic welding duties as per AWS D15.1, Part I, Section D, Item 17, Welder Qualification.

Basic Welding Test – consists of joining two pieces of similar metal (mild steel) using the process of grooved down hand with SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).

The test plate is then bent using the root bend and face bend method 180° to prove that the weld is as strong as the base metal.

Advanced Welding Test – consists of joining two pieces of similar metal (structural steel) using the process of both vertical and overhead with SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).

The test plate is then bent using the root bend and face bend method 180° to prove that the weld is as strong as the base metal.

RR Component Welding Test – consists of welding on Hatfield1 and carbon rail steel.  Close attention is paid to the strict adherence of following the appropriate welding procedures for each type of steel to be welded. The welder is required to produce a workmanship sample per AWS D 15.2.

1Manganese Castings (HATFIELD STEEL): A work hardening cast steel containing 12 to 14% manganese.
